ITALY RANKS THIRD GLOBALLY FOR UNI EN ISO 14001 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS: THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF AUDITORS IN THE GREEN ECONOMY

About 2.4 million management system certificates have been issued globally, including about 141,000 in Italy, highlighting the growing impact of these competitive tools on public and private organizations.

With twice as many certificates as Germany, Italy ranks as the second largest country in the world for the number of ISO 9001 certificates, just behind China and ahead of India. Italian companies boast 94,216 active certificates, representing 7 percent of the global total of active certificates worldwide.

What’s more, Italy ranks third in the world for UNI EN ISO 14001 environmental management systems, with more than 20,000 active certificates, and also ranks first in Europe, surpassing the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany.

Organizational efficiency and image improvement remain the main motivations for certification adoption, with the three ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) components becoming increasingly important in corporate strategy.

In this context, Auditors and Lead Auditors qualified for the 14001 standard are emerging as key figures in the green value chain, helping to ensure the compliance and validity of environmental management systems. The decision of Auditors to certify their competence with accredited third-party bodies, such as Ricec International, amplifies the importance of and confidence in the professionalism offered to companies, consolidating their credibility.
